Known by Name

The single most important thing a school can offer a child is not a facility or a result. It is the experience of being genuinely known. Why we keep our classes small on purpose.

When a family visits us for the first time, they often arrive with a list of questions about facilities and results. I answer them all. But I always try to speak about something that rarely appears on such a list, and yet matters more than any of it: whether a child will be known.

Not a number in a crowd

Many small figures, with one warmly highlighted — every child known individually

It is easy for a child to disappear in a large school. Not through anyone’s unkindness — simply through arithmetic. When a teacher has too many faces to hold in mind, the quiet child, the struggling child, the child having a hard week at home, can all slip past unseen. We have chosen, deliberately, to stay small enough that this does not happen here. Our teachers know their students by name, by temperament, by the subjects that light them up and the ones that make them anxious.

Why it changes everything

A child who feels known behaves differently. They ask the question they would otherwise have swallowed. They admit the thing they do not understand, because they trust the adult in front of them. They take the small risks — putting up a hand, trying out for a part, attempting the harder problem — that learning actually depends on. Confidence does not come from being told you are special. It comes from being seen.

This is also why we treat parents as partners rather than customers. A teacher who knows your child, and who can reach you easily, catches the small problem before it becomes a large one. Much of the good in a school happens in these unremarkable, personal conversations.

Facilities matter, and we are proud of ours. Results matter, and we work hard for them. But if you ask me what a Wendy education really offers, it is this: your child, in a place where they are known, and where being known makes them braver. That is not a feature we added. It is the reason the school exists.
